Nasal Esketamine
Dear colleagues
Besides electrical interventions such as ECT and TMS, pharmacological interventions are also part of interventional psychiatry. Well-known here are the short infusions with e.g. antidepressants. However, new pharmacological interventions such as the administration of ketamine, an NMDA antagonist known primarily as an anaesthetic, for the treatment of depression also fall into this category. Esketamine is now approved for nasal administration in treatment-resistant depression in Switzerland.
Nevertheless, a high level of expertise is required for the indication and especially the application. The SGIP-SSPI, as a society of psychiatrists dealing with the indication and application of interventional methods for the treatment of psychiatric disorders or diseases, sees itself responsible for also covering questions on the correct indication and application in pharmacological psychiatric interventions.
